God is a Trinity. He has revealed Himself to us as a Relationship so we too are made for relationship. He invites us to relate to Him in each person of the Trinity.
The Father
God said: “I thought you would call me ‘Father’” – Jeremiah 3:19. He is very aware how we can go through life with a sense of being fatherless and knows that we need Him to father us. Often our experiences with our own father will affect how well we are able to relate to our Heavenly Father and how we see Him.
How comfortable do you feel about the idea of coming to God as Father?
Do you see Him as the compassionate welcoming Father who wants to bless and encourage you? Is He interested in you? Is He someone who is there for you and involved in our life? Or are you expecting a face of disapproval or disinterest? Do you see Him as angry, controlling, absent, distant, passive or disengaged in your life?
Some of us would rather keep Him at arm’s length and hide from Him. Our hearts are unsure about Him, even when we know in our heads that He is loving & good. There is a journey for each of us, from knowing the truth that we are Beloved Sons and Daughters of the Father in our heads, to experiencing this to be true in our hearts.
The Father understands what this is all about and wants to restore our vision of Him. He sees where we are wounded and where we have orphan hearts that needs adopting! He knows where we feel insecure, alone and it is hard for us to trust. He knows how much we need to experience Him as our truly good and loving Father.
Jesus the Son
Jesus came into the world and chose to totally mingle in with us as human beings, so He knows what life is like first hand. He experienced being despised, rejected and betrayed. He felt hunger, tiredness, pain and He was tempted in every way as we are. He can therefore identify with us when we struggle. He really gets us and understands why things hurt.
He knew that we needed help so He came into our world to bring good news to us and fulfill all the prophecies of the Old Testament: to bind up our broken hearts, to bring freedom, to comfort us, to provide for us, to bring beauty and life to us instead of ashes and death, to give us joy instead of despair. To bring us honour and righteousness instead of shame and disgrace. Isaiah 61.
Through the Cross He made the way for us to come to the Father and know Him.
We are now invited to come into this place of belonging and son-ship/daughter-ship.
It was for the joy that was set before Him that He endured the Cross. Hebrews 12:2. He knew it would bring joy to His Father to receive His children back and He knew it would bring us joy.
He is not ashamed of calling us brothers and sisters. Hebrews 2:11
Do you feel that Jesus understands you? Is He on your side? Can you call on Him when you need help…when you need saving?
Holy Spirit the Comforter
Jesus said: I will not leave you as Orphans. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. John 14:16-18.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and our Counselor who comes with wisdom to guide us into truth and to reveal where we have believed in lies.
Who are you listening to? Which voices speak loudest in your life?
The Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of Adoption” and guarantee of the Father’s love until we see Him face to face. We need the Holy Spirit to bring us to that place of adoption with the Father. He works the work of the cross into our lives physically and spiritually, and restores our relationship with the Father.
He knows us better than we know ourselves. He finds us in our desert places and comes to us as Living Water when we are dry and thirsty, when we need to be refreshed and washed clean. He fills us where we are empty and brings His comfort and peace. He prays for us with sighs too deep for words and moves us from grief to comfort and into joy.
Can you let the Holy Spirit be your comforter or is it easier to turn to your own ways of finding comfort? The Holy Spirit knows that our own ways of seeking comfort, connection or to escape pain can become addictive as they never satisfy our real thirst and needs. Can you invite Him into your area of need for Him to bring His living water and true comfort?
