Yoda or Peregrine Falcon?

You are here: Home / Blog / Yoda or Peregrine Falcon?

February 19, 2018

  or

My son often asks ‘Who would you rather be?’ questions, but this one has stayed with me. On the school run recently he asked, “Dad, who would you rather be, Yoda or a peregrine falcon?” Good question!

Usually my answer would have easily been Yoda as he’s my favourite character from Star Wars. However, I also liked the idea of being a peregrine falcon.

Yoda is a wise sage who brings calm and objectivity to those around him.  He’s also a skilled warrior who knows how to use ‘The Force’.  He lived a long and full life and left an important legacy.

On the other hand, the peregrine falcon, when dropping from great heights; can reach speeds of 200 mph, making it the fastest animal in the world.  They can survive in a wide variety of habitats and the males are very territorial (during breeding season) and will vigorously defend their nests.

I was in a slight dilemma, as the only dream I recall from childhood is of being the king of the birds, living high up in the clouds.  The thought of being able to fly still fascinates me and my son says he would love to be a bird.  However, I also loved Star Wars and remember fondly my action figures and Darth Vader Star Destroyer –  wish I’d kept them, but at least I now get to share a Yoda alarm clock.

Wisdom, skilled fighter, speed, adaptability, protector.  These combined qualities all appeal.  Maybe it’s a male thing, although I’ve seen many women light up when wielding one of the wooden swords we use as visual aids!

My heart says “yes” when thinking of these qualities and of course, the real reason for this  is because God put them in our ‘DNA’:

‘Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do. Whatever else you get, get insight.’ Proverbs 4:7

‘The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name.’ Exodus 15:3

Even speed is a possibility with God!  ‘The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.’ 1 Kings 18:46

“Jesus, please give me wisdom, help me be adaptable and make me a skilled warrior in your Kingdom.  Thank you that I can be ‘fast’ when needed through the power of your Spirit.”

After some thought, I still chose Yoda as although I like the idea of flying at the exhilarating speed of 200 mph, my stronger desire is to be like the Jedi Master.
